Snow Storm

It snowed about eight inches last night here in Newark Delaware. On the forecast there was mention of "Snow thunder". That was a thrilling possibility, thunder during a snow storm!
It was not the first snow of the year, but the first of more that three or four inches.
Here in Delaware when it snows every thing shuts down, and everyone takes the day off. At first it seemed a little wimpy, compared to Juneau Alaska where they pride themselves on rarely cancelling school. But here in the northeast there are so many people, and so many cars on the road, it makes sense because it is safer to just tell everyone to stay home.
There is a paragraph in a book Cami is reading that describes the feelings perfectly. I always get a great feeling when it snows, every since I was a kid.

There is something joyful about storms that interrupt routine. Snow or freezing rain suddenly releases you from expectations, performance demands, and the tyranny of appointments and schedules. And unlike illness, it is largely a corporate rather than individual experience. One can almost hear a unified sigh rise from the nearby city and surrounding countryside where Nature has intervened to give respite to the weary humans slogging it out within her purview.

All those affected this way are united by a mutual excuse, and the heart is suddenly and unexpectedly a little giddy. There will be no apologies needed for not showing up for some commitment or other. Everyone understands and shares in this singular justification, and the sudden alleviation of the pressure to produce makes the heart merry.
